World Cup: Mexico Celebrates El Tri's Qualification

Mexico has already advanced to the next round of the 2026 World Cup and celebrations have intensified throughout the country. Javier Aguirre’s team defeated South Korea 1-0 in Guadalajara and became the first team to qualify for the knockout stage.

The victory also secured another home match for El Tri. Mexico will play its Round of 16 match and, if it advances, could also play in Mexico City. According to Reuters, the result left it atop Group A with 6 points.

The qualification unleashed massive celebrations in the capital. The Angel of Independence became the most visible focal point of the euphoria. Amid flags, chants, and stopped traffic, the victory reconnected the team with its fans.

How Was Qualification Sealed?

The goal came in the 50th minute. Luis Romo capitalized on an error by goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and pushed the ball into the net. The goal was enough to decide a tight and tense match.

South Korea had clear opportunities in the closing stages. Raúl Rangel saved Mexico with a decisive save in the 87th minute. Edson Álvarez also cleared a Son Heung-min chance off the goal line, though the play was ultimately disallowed for offside.
