Trump Admits He Pressured FIFA to Save Balogun

Donald Trump confirmed that he called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of Folarin Balogun‘s suspension. The federation ultimately lifted the one-match suspension and the forward was cleared to play against Belgium.

The U.S. president defended the play from the White House. He said the action was not a foul and called Balogun “our best player,” in statements reported by international media outlets.

What Did FIFA Decide?

FIFA announced on Sunday that the suspension would be suspended for one year on probation. The measure allows Balogun to play the decisive World Cup match against Belgium. The decision was extraordinary because the red card was not completely annulled. Instead, the organization suspended the execution of the sanction, using Article 27 of its disciplinary code.

That article allows judicial bodies to suspend a disciplinary sanction in whole or in part. However, it does not specify under what circumstances it should be applied, except in match-fixing cases. The U.S. Soccer Federation accepted the decision. According to CBS News, U.S. Soccer stated it is satisfied with the ruling and focused on the round-of-16 match.

Trump admitted that he spoke with Infantino to request a case review. He also said he was the one who convinced FIFA to make that decision. That claim escalated the controversy because it places the White House within a sporting decision. Reuters reported that the call occurred before FIFA’s announcement.

Trump defended his position as someone who understands sports. He also attacked referee Raphael Claus, whom he described as “suspicious,” although without presenting public evidence. The case also raised questions about FIFA’s independence. Several international outlets reported that Belgium is considering challenging the decision.

Why Is It So Controversial?

Because the decision breaks with the usual logic of the regulations. Under normal circumstances, a direct red card implies an automatic one-match suspension. UEFA said the ruling crossed a “red line.” For that organization, automatic suspension should not depend on discretionary judgment.

The discussion no longer extends to just one match. It also touches on competitive equity, because other players with red cards do not receive the same special treatment. Balogun remains eligible, but under a one-year probation period. If he commits a similar offense, the sanction will be reactivated.
