“They Pressured the Referee”: Egypt Coach Explodes Against Argentina

Egypt’s defeat to Argentina in Atlanta ended in major controversy. Hossam Hassan, coach of the African national team, claimed that Argentina exerted pressure on the referee and that his team was harmed by key decisions.

The complaint did not only point to the refereeing. It also included VAR usage, a possible uncalled penalty, and the match schedule, played at noon in Atlanta. The dispute escalated because Argentina came back 2 goals down and secured a 3-2 victory that eliminated Egypt from the 2026 World Cup.

The frustration of Egypt’s coaching staff has transcended the sporting result. The Egyptian Football Association also stated that it “cannot remain silent” over what it considers unfair refereeing. With that, the case moved from a specific complaint to a broader institutional claim.

What Did Hossam Hassan Say?

Hassan claimed that Egypt was better with possession during several stretches of the match. According to his analysis, the scoreboard did not reflect what happened on the field. He also said the defeat was influenced by internal and external factors.

The coach went further and pointed to pressure on referee François Letexier. In his press conference, he suggested that the environment favored Argentina and that this bias affected the outcome.

Hassan also harshly criticized the match schedule. He said playing at noon was a decision made without soccer criteria. For him, the heat and fatigue affected the physical performance of his players.

What Plays Sparked the Outrage?

Egypt was especially upset about 2 actions. The first was the disallowed goal after VAR review. The second was a possible penalty in the final stretch, when Argentina had already begun its comeback.

The Egyptians argue that those decisions changed the match. If the second goal had been allowed or if the penalty had been called, the story could have been different. This type of analysis typically intensifies after such dramatic eliminations.

Argentina, meanwhile, scored 3 times in the final minutes and advanced to the quarterfinals. The victory reinforced the image of a team that competes until the end, but it also left doubts among rivals. In long tournaments, a comeback like this always generates mixed opinions.
