Paraguay Condemns Senator’s Insults Against Mbappé

Controversial and harsh statements by opposition senator Celeste Amarilla against French footballer Kylian Mbappé have triggered a wave of institutional rejection in Paraguay. The national government and various legislative authorities quickly distanced themselves from the racist insults issued following the South American country’s elimination at the 2026 World Cup.

Paraguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a forceful official statement rejecting the legislator’s conduct. Executive authorities stated that Amarilla’s unfortunate words correspond exclusively to her sole individual responsibility and do not represent the State’s position in any way.

In addition to rejecting the offenses directed at the European national team captain, the government reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to maintaining a historic relationship of sincere friendship and profound mutual respect toward the entire French people. This swift action seeks to protect good diplomatic relations between both nations.

What Did High Congressional Authorities Say?

Paraguayan Congress president Basilio Núñez also strongly condemned his fellow legislator’s conduct. Through his popular social media accounts, Núñez flatly rejected all «racist, xenophobic messages and those inciting violence against any person.»

The parliamentary leader explicitly clarified that «these comments do not represent the genuine values of Paraguayans.» His words sought to ease the enormous international media tension unleashed after the senator from the Authentic Radical Liberal Party’s viral xenophobic posts.

Other legislators, such as deputy Mauricio Espínola, publicly recommended that Senator Amarilla retract immediately. Espínola seriously warned that this type of international scandal unfairly tarnishes the tremendous reputation and good image of the entire national Congress.

How Did This Serious International Conflict Escalate?

The origin of this enormous problem lies in Amarilla’s furious messages. After the intense World Cup match ended, she severely criticized Mbappé for not greeting Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill. In her anger, she derisively called him a «colonized Cameroonian,» among many other racist insults.
