A massive brawl between Argentina and Algeria fans sparked panic in Times Square on Tuesday. Hours before the World Cup match, groups of supporters turned their chants into violent assaults with bottles and punches. The confrontation disrupted pedestrian traffic and forced intervention by local security forces.
The clash occurred in the heart of New York’s tourist district during a gathering to support the national teams. Both squads were set to face off that same day at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City for Group J. According to preliminary reports, tension escalated rapidly following intense verbal exchanges.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported that supporters came to blows after exchanging obscene gestures and insults. Additionally, the outlet noted that police made arrests while attempting to separate the violent groups. However, U.S. authorities have yet to release a detailed report on casualties or formal detainees.
How Did the Brawl in Times Square Start?
Videos circulating on social media show how the dispute spiraled out of control in the middle of public space. Both groups began singing traditional soccer chants in a dynamic that seemed purely folkloric and festive. Unfortunately, the atmosphere grew tense suddenly until the first direct blows erupted.
Fans wearing Argentina and Algeria jerseys exchanged violent kicks, punches, and physical assaults. The throwing of blunt objects such as glass bottles and beverage cans was also recorded. The exchange of aggression caused great alarm among thousands of tourists present in the central area.
In the midst of absolute chaos, some children quickly ran to safety from the imminent danger. Simultaneously, people unrelated to the violent dispute attempted to separate those involved and control the agitated crowd. The situation required rapid deployment of police units to restore public order.
