Trump Threatens Iran: Will Make Them “Pay” for Soldier Deaths

The conflict between the United States and Iran escalated further on Monday. Donald Trump publicly warned that Iran “will pay many times over” each time it causes the death of an American soldier. The message, posted on his Truth Social network, adds to a series of military and political decisions since late February, when Washington and Israel launched a joint offensive that led to the current war against Tehran.

What Did Trump Say and Who Is His Order Directed At?

In his post, Trump stated: “Every time Iran kills an American soldier, they will pay for that murder many times over.” A formula he repeated in several statements to emphasize that the response will not be proportional, but multiplied. The president assured that this directive was communicated to Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Daniel Caine, and “all military leaders” of the country.

The message has a dual audience. On one hand, it aims to deter Iran and allied forces that may attack American positions in the region. On the other, it sends an internal signal of firmness to a public that follows the war and rising military casualties with concern. In March, Trump had already posted a video warning that “there could be more American deaths” and promising the “most severe blow” against the Iranian government.

The warning comes as the United States chains consecutive nights of bombardment over Iranian territory. According to outlets like Al Jazeera, Monday marked the ninth consecutive day of attacks on sites deemed “critical,” in response to recent soldier deaths. Trump’s message establishes a political framework for these attacks: each American death will trigger new military actions, fueling a cycle of retaliatory strikes that is difficult to deactivate.

What Happened to the American Military Personnel?

The Department of Defense reported that 2 soldiers died over the weekend in Iran-linked attacks against a military base in Jordan. Additionally, another soldier was killed in northern Iraq during the controlled demolition of explosives associated with a downed Iranian drone. Central Command (CENTCOM) explained that the attacks in Jordan combined ballistic missiles and drones against American positions. This resulted, in addition to the deaths, in several wounded and one soldier initially reported as missing.

The Pentagon subsequently identified the two soldiers killed in Jordan: First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25 years old, and Soldier Isabella Gonzales, 19 years old. Both were assigned to Army air defense units at bases in the United States and Germany, respectively. The death in Iraq occurred while handling wreckage from an Iranian attack drone. An operation CENTCOM described as “controlled detonation” of unexploded ammunition.

With these cases, the number of American military personnel killed since the beginning of the war with Iran rose to at least 17, according to central command records. The offensive began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched approximately 900 joint attacks in the first 12 hours against Iranian targets. Since then, Tehran has responded with actions at multiple points in the Middle East, including missile strikes on Jordan and attacks on infrastructure in Gulf nations.
