Sheinbaum Demands U.S. Stop Using Mexico in Electoral Campaigns

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum asked the United States not to use Mexico as a “piñata” in the campaign leading up to midterm elections. The response came after criticism from Republican Congressman Carlos Giménez over Mexican aid to Cuba.

Sheinbaum argued that Mexico should not become a U.S. electoral issue. She also affirmed that her government maintains coordination with Washington, but “without subordination.”

The verbal clash adds tension to a relationship already marked by trade, migration, and pressure over Cuba. Additionally, it occurs while Mexico, the United States, and Canada renegotiate the T-MEC.

Why Did the New Clash Erupt?

The controversy began after Giménez accused the Mexican government of weakening Washington’s policy toward Havana. The congressman, born in Cuba, defended a hardline stance against the Cuban government. On his X account, Giménez claimed that Mexico “are not good neighbors” and warned of consequences. His remarks became known after a new shipment of Mexican humanitarian aid to Cuba.

Sheinbaum responded at her morning press conference. She said Mexico should not be used in the U.S. electoral contest because the United States has its own internal problems. The president also defended sending aid to Cuba as a historical stance of the Mexican state.

She insisted it is a matter of solidarity, sovereignty, and humanitarian support, not political provocation. This point is key to understanding the conflict. Mexico maintains that its relationship with Cuba responds to traditional diplomatic principles. Washington, meanwhile, is hardening its pressure on the island with sanctions and conditionalities.

What Role Does Cuba Play in This Dispute?

Sheinbaum reaffirmed that Mexico will continue helping the Cuban people. She stated there is a historical relationship and that she does not support the embargo that devastates the population. This support is not new. Reuters reported that Mexico and Uruguay sent humanitarian aid to Cuba amid the energy crisis and supply shortages.

In February, Sheinbaum had already stated that her government would send food assistance and other provisions. She also acknowledged that Mexico sought to avoid sanctions while maintaining humanitarian support. More recently, the Mexican government confirmed another shipment of aid to the island. The contents included food, medicine, and basic supplies to address the social and economic crisis.
