The differences became evident when the number of deceased military personnel dropped from 18 to 14 people. At the same time, registered wounded soldiers decreased from 482 to just 420 personnel. This reduction is particularly striking considering previous statements from the Department of Defense itself about the magnitude of the conflict.

Contradiction with previous Pentagon statements

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell had reported days earlier about a considerable increase in recorded casualties. He asserted that nearly a hundred additional personnel had been recently wounded. This figure corresponded to the period since daily combat with Iran resumed in early July. The contradiction between both statements immediately generated doubts among U.S. analysts and lawmakers. This controversy over the figures coincides with a relevant administrative change in the official designation of the military conflict.

The name change that raises doubts

The controversy arose after the Donald Trump administration ended in May what was called Operation Epic Fury. This was the official name assigned to the military campaign against Iran. Since then, new U.S. attacks have been classified under a different designation: “overseas operations.” This administrative change immediately aroused suspicion among different political sectors. This situation provoked criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. Congress. Republican representative Thomas Massie was especially forceful in his public statements.

Massie claimed that the Pentagon would be treating the conflict as if they were two completely different wars. According to his interpretation, this strategy would seek to avoid restrictions established by the War Powers Resolution.

This resolution specifically limits military operations conducted without direct authorization from the U.S. Congress.

Democrats demand complete and accurate records

For their part, Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee also demanded concrete answers from the Pentagon. They directly requested from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth a complete record of all casualties.

This requirement seeks to know with precision the actual number of military personnel killed and wounded since the start of the conflict with Iran. Lawmakers consider it fundamental to have verifiable and transparent data about the real human cost of the war.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also joined the criticism against the Department of Defense. Her concern arose following a particularly sensitive incident related to the official database.

Hochul criticized that the name of one of the fallen soldiers temporarily disappeared from the government platform. She considered this fact as a serious affront to the memory of the fallen soldier.

The governor asserted that the human cost of war cannot be modified for political reasons of any kind.

The Pentagon acknowledges technical failures without a solution date

The Department of Defense reiterated publicly that it is currently working to resolve the technical failures of the affected system. However, it has not yet offered detailed explanations about the specific origin of these inconsistencies.

Nor has a concrete date been established for the definitive correction of the erroneous figures on the official platform. This lack of clarity has intensified criticism of information management during the current conflict.
