An investigation into votes cast by non-citizens in New Jersey has sparked a national debate on election security. Governor Mikie Sherrill attributed approximately 6,600 improper voter registrations to a technical error in the Motor Vehicle Commission system between June 2023 and June 2024, with fewer than 400 of those individuals actually voting in subsequent elections.

An investigation in New Jersey into votes cast by people registered as non-citizens has opened a new national discussion on election security. Governor Mikie Sherrill said a technical error in the state system allowed improper registrations between June 2023 and June 2024.
What Did New Jersey Find?
Sherrill explained that the failure occurred in the state’s Motor Vehicle Commission, known as MVC. According to her account, the system allowed people who indicated they were not citizens to be registered to vote, although that is not legal. The governor said she learned of the problem last week and ordered an immediate investigation.

A preliminary review of her office indicates that approximately 6,600 people were registered due to this error. Of that group, fewer than 400 would have voted in subsequent elections. Sherrill said that these people were distributed among Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, showing that the problem did not favor a single party.
The governor also asserted that anyone illegally registered will be removed from the voter rolls. Additionally, she criticized the lack of transparency from the previous administration and called it “unacceptable.” For Sherrill
