Republican Senator Lindsey Graham was honored Tuesday with a state funeral at the Capitol Rotunda, ahead of his funeral service at Washington National Cathedral. The legislator, one of the most influential figures in Congress in recent decades, died suddenly on July 11 at age 71.

His casket, draped with the American flag, was carried by an Armed Forces honor guard, in recognition of his more than 30 years of service in the Air Force. The ceremony marked the beginning of two days of tributes in Washington and South Carolina.

In the Rotunda, Republican and Democratic leaders, as well as civil and military officials, gathered to remember Graham as a tireless senator and key interlocutor in foreign policy, defense, and bipartisan negotiations.

How Was the Capitol Tribute?

The ceremony began with the arrival of the casket at the Capitol, accompanied by a military honor guard. This protocol is reserved for figures deemed of national significance, such as former presidents, congressional leaders, and high-ranking military officials. Once in the Rotunda, the casket remained in the place of honor while a brief remembrance ceremony was held. There, colleagues from both parties and members of Graham’s family had the opportunity to pay their respects.

Vice President JD Vance spoke during the tribute and recalled the differences he had with Graham over the war in Ukraine. However, he emphasized that those disagreements never affected their personal relationship. Vance noted that the senator was “a steadfast defender of Ukraine” and spoke of an intense discussion during a Senate lunch. He added that he preferred to remember him as “a man who could disagree without becoming disagreeable,” emphasizing his strong but respectful style of debate.

Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune had announced days earlier that Graham would lie in state in the Rotunda. Thune considered it “only fair” to grant this special honor to a legislator who spent more than 23 years in the Upper Chamber.

What to Expect at the Funeral?

Following the Capitol tribute, Graham’s body was transported to Washington National Cathedral. There is scheduled a funeral at 2:00 p.m. local time, with the attendance of President Donald Trump and several international leaders. According to the office of Senator Darline Graham, the deceased’s sister and interim replacement, Trump will speak during the ceremony. Other figures will participate including conservative personalities such as Sean Hannity and religious leaders affiliated with the Christian right.
