ICE Auctions Off $700 Million Immigrant Detention Centers

The strategy promoted to expand immigrant detention capacity faces a new setback in the United States. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency plans to sell or transfer seven large industrial facilities. These properties were recently acquired at an approximate cost of 700 million dollars, according to a report published by the newspaper The New York Times.

The transactions are part of a package of 11 warehouses originally purchased during the tenure of then-National Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The total cost of those government purchases was close to 1 billion dollars. The initial objective was to convert these large spaces into strategic centers for processing, detaining, and deporting thousands of immigrants.

However, some of the warehouses acquired by ICE never entered operation due to their high cost and various logistical problems. The arrival of Markwayne Mullin at the helm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) drastically changed the course of this ambitious federal project. The new administration chose to halt the expansion and review the viability of the facilities.

Why did this million-dollar plan fail before it could get off the ground?

The warehouses were acquired following a significant injection of federal resources from the budget package known as the One Big Beautiful Act. This economic measure was strongly promoted by President Donald Trump’s administration. The goal was to centralize detentions in state-owned structures.

According to the government documents cited, these massive facilities were designed to house between 7,000 and 10,000 detainees each. They would serve as checkpoints before final deportation from the country. The properties are located in key states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Despite the resources, several properties faced strong resistance from local communities. This sparked lawsuits and investigations by government agencies that delayed or completely prevented the launch of the processing centers. Construction came to a standstill.

What risks and questions halted the opening of the centers?

The location of the complexes also raised serious concerns. For example, the future ICE detention center in Arizona would be located directly across from a facility dedicated to storing hazardous chemicals. This triggered local alarms over the massive chemical risk to detainees.

Claire Trickler-McNulty, a former ICE official during the Biden administration, openly questioned the viability of the strategy. The specialist noted that the warehouses have caused serious headaches due to ongoing state litigation. Additionally, the DHS Office of Inspector General maintains an open investigation.

The investigations seek to determine whether the million-dollar spending complied with efficiency regulations and actual service needs. Secretary Markwayne Mullin decided to subject all contracts signed by his predecessor, Kristi Noem, to strict review. This halted any intention of immediate opening.
