House Democrats are pushing for impeachment against Linda McMahon. Trump’s Secretary of Education faces accusations of illegal dismantling of her department. Resolution H.R. 1391 was introduced by Representative Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon on June 25. According to Newsweek records, the measure currently has 19 additional Democratic co-sponsors.
McMahon, a former WWE executive, was confirmed as Secretary of Education during Trump’s second term. Democrats accuse the official of transferring programs to other federal agencies without Congressional approval. This action would violate federal law and obstruct the department’s ability to fulfill assigned responsibilities. The effort represents one of Democrats’ most aggressive responses to Trump’s education agenda.
Representative Bonamici stated that McMahon has no legal right to close the Department of Education. According to her statements to Newsweek, all students deserve education that meets their needs and provides opportunities for a better future. The legislator stated she will not allow McMahon to violate the law and undermine student rights. This stance reflects growing opposition to plans to reduce the federal government’s role in education.
What Does the Impeachment Resolution Allege?
The impeachment resolution accuses McMahon of “willful and systematic refusal to comply with the law.” Democratic lawmakers assert that she illegally transferred operations from six offices of the Department of Education to other agencies. According to the text of the resolution, these actions obstructed the department’s ability to carry out responsibilities assigned by Congress. Affected offices include K-12, higher education, technical and career education, civil rights, and special education functions.
The measure argues that McMahon violated federal law by approving agreements that changed the administration of multiple programs. These transfers were made without constitutionally required legislative authorization. Democrats contend this constitutes an abuse of power warranting impeachment proceedings. The secretary would be exceeding her legal authority in implementing the federal government reduction agenda.
The Department of Education responded by referring to a McMahon post on social media X on the day of the announcement. The official stated that “it says a lot that Democrats think a felony is working to improve student outcomes and reduce federal bureaucracy.” According to her statement, Washington spends billions annually, having spent more than 3 trillion dollars since the department was established in 1980.
Who Supports This Democratic Initiative?
Suzanne Bonamici of Oregon is the lead sponsor of the impeachment resolution. She introduced the measure with 16 original co-sponsors on June 25. Three additional lawmakers joined days later, bringing the total to 19 co-sponsors. According to Newsweek information, all current sponsors are Democrats with no Republican support whatsoever.
