Democrats Respond with Messi Video to Trump and Cristiano Post

The U.S. Democratic Party ignited political and soccer conversation on Wednesday by publishing a video featuring Lionel Messi on its TikTok account. The post came less than 24 hours after the White House released images of President Donald Trump walking alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, accompanied by the message «two GOATS» referring to «the greatest of all time.» This move marks an unexpected turn where the eternal soccer debate directly mixes with American politics.
The video distributed by Democrats brings together several iconic moments in the career of the Argentine star. Historic goals with FC Barcelona appear, plays with Paris Saint-Germain, celebrations with the Argentine national team, and the presentation of one of his 8 Ballon d’Or awards. The compilation functions as a symbolic response to Trump’s gesture, who on November 18 publicly highlighted Ronaldo’s presence at the presidential residence during a gala dinner in honor of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Visit to the White House
Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Washington accompanied by his partner, Georgina Rodríguez, as part of the Saudi delegation. The footballer stayed at a luxury hotel located just one street away from the White House, from where he was received as a global celebrity. In the video published by the government, Trump walked alongside Ronaldo and highlighted his son Barron Trump’s excitement about meeting the Portuguese forward. The White House also shared photos of both in the Oval Office with the presidential gold key.

This trip marks Cristiano’s return to the United States after more than 10 years. His last visit had been in 2014, during a preseason with Real Madrid. Trump highlighted during the dinner that Barron is «a big fan» of the footballer and that the 19-year-old was impressed by meeting Ronaldo in person. The Al-Nassr footballer publicly thanked him on social networks, writing that each person «has something valuable to contribute» to inspire new generations.
The Democrats’ Response
Messi’s appearance on the official Democratic Party account aims to capitalize on the enormous popularity of the player in the United States. Especially since his arrival at Inter Miami two years ago, Messi has gained millions of American followers. Democrats sought to counteract the media impact generated by the Republican video of Trump with Cristiano. The strategy was clear: use the Argentine as their own sports symbol amid the political campaign.

The video was accompanied by music and quickly went viral on digital platforms. Followers immediately understood it was a smart political move. While Trump used Ronaldo to reinforce his public image and demonstrate his international reach, Democrats bet on Messi as a counterweight. The maneuver proved effective, generating thousands of comments and shares on social networks.
How Does This Relate to the 2026 World Cup?
Cristiano’s visit to the White House occurs 7 months before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. His presence sparked speculation about promotional reasons related to the World Cup. There is also speculation about a possible visit by the Portuguese player with his national team before the major tournament, as there are rumors that the United States could play a friendly against Portugal in March 2026.
