Controversy: Trump Claims Credit for Walmart Price Cuts

President Donald Trump claimed credit Monday for Walmart’s recent price cuts, saying the retailer cut prices «at the request of my government,» but Walmart’s official statement made no mention of government involvement in the decision.

U.S. President Donald Trump generated fresh controversy this Monday. He attempted to claim credit for recent price cuts announced by Walmart. He did so through a social media post with a triumphant and celebratory tone. However, the company’s official statement made no mention of any government involvement in the decision.

«I was just informed that Walmart will lower prices, and significantly, at the request of my government,» Trump wrote. He added that the company would reduce the price of a pound of ground beef by nearly 15%. He also mentioned «many other products» as part of the announced discounts. The message sought to position the president as the direct architect of an improvement for consumers.

Walmart responded with its own statement published after the presidential declaration. In it, the company stated that its price reductions at Walmart and Sam’s Club «aim to help customers and members make the most» of summer season. There was no mention of interactions with the federal government. The company also made no public comments about the president’s statements.

An inflation that contradicts the presidential narrative

The economic context in which Trump launches this message is delicate. Consumer price inflation has risen 4.2% over the last 12 months. That figure far exceeds the 3% rate Trump inherited upon taking office. The data come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and contradict the narrative of economic success promoted by the Executive branch.

The initial price increases occurred following Trump’s strict tariff policy. This was compounded by the impact of the start of the war against Iran in late February. Both factors contributed to pushing inflation upward. The president has faced growing public criticism for this deterioration in citizens’ purchasing power.

However, some inflationary pressures could begin to ease. A provisional ceasefire agreement with Iran led to a drop in oil prices. This occurred because more ships were able to navigate the Strait of Hormuz. The opening of this strategic route has direct effects on global energy costs.

Walmart and Trump: A relationship with its own history

The relationship between the president and the world’s largest retail chain does not begin this Monday. Trump has historically used Walmart as a barometer of American consumer sentiment. However, that relationship has had moments of public tension and contradictory statements. What occurred this Monday is merely the latest chapter in a complex relationship.

Just over a year ago, Trump attacked the company directly on his social media. «Walmart must stop trying to blame tariffs as a reason for raising prices,» he posted then. He also demanded that the company and China «swallow the tariffs» without passing the costs to consumers. Today’s words starkly contrast with that threatening tone from the past.

In May 2025, Trump was even more direct. He told the company it needed to «absorb» the cost of the tariffs he himself had imposed unilaterally. That public pressure on a private company generated criticism over the consistency of the presidential discourse. Now, the same president claims credit for a business decision the company made for its own reasons.

The political paradox behind the announcement

Trump’s post has a political dimension that goes beyond supermarket prices. Looking ahead to the November legislative elections, control of Congress is at stake. The president has sought to position himself as a consumer advocate against a Democratic party that, according to him, intends to interfere in private companies. But claiming credit for Walmart’s decisions complicates that message.

Trump has labeled Democrats «communists who would have government interfere with private companies.» Yet claiming that Walmart lowered prices «at the request of his government» sounds precisely like that: state interference in private business decisions. The contradiction did not go unnoticed among political analysts and media outlets.

Walmart, for its part, has benefited from the inflationary context during Trump’s term. Consumers have turned to its stores and website in search of lower prices than at other retailers. Its May quarterly results reflected that increase in demand. The company has its own strategic reasons for announcing discounts during summer season.

What became clear this Monday is that the gap between the presidential narrative and corporate reality can be wide. Trump said Walmart acted at his request. Walmart said it acted for its customers. Two versions of the same announcement that reveal the constant tension between politics and economics in the Trump era.
