ALERT: Trump Offers $5,000 if Republican Party Wins Midterms

President Donald Trump promised Wednesday a payment of $5,000 to each American adult. The condition: that the Republican Party retain control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections in November. The announcement occurred during the first night of the 2026 Republican National Convention (RNC), in Dallas, Texas.

Trump did not explain how he would finance the so-called «Trump dividend.» He compared the measure to dividend payments that companies make to their shareholders. He also linked it to the additional $1,776 checks his administration delivered to military personnel last year.

The «Trump dividend» promise and its conditions

The president set a clear condition for the payment. «If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both,» Trump said to attendees in Dallas. The money, he added, would have to be spent within the United States.

This is not the first time Trump has proposed a direct payment funded by tariff revenue. In November 2025, he mentioned a «tariff dividend» of $2,000 per person. The new figure of $5,000 represents a considerable increase compared to that previous proposal.

The president justified the country’s economic capacity by citing what he called an «economic success» of his administration. Nevertheless, the United States public debt exceeds $40 trillion, according to official Treasury figures. Economic analysts consulted by media outlets such as NPR characterized the promise as unrealistic without a clear source of financing.

Political context: low approval ratings and an economy under pressure

Trump seeks to reverse a historical trend. The party that occupies the White House usually loses seats in midterm elections. The president also faces low approval ratings and signs of economic strain.

The price of oil reached $100 per barrel this week, its highest level since July. The increase is related to the war that the United States initiated against Iran. Gasoline prices rose in consequence, an issue that Democrats use to criticize Republican candidates.

At the convention, several Republican legislators defended Trump’s 2025 tax law. The regulation eliminated taxes on tips and overtime for eligible workers. Representative Derrick Van Orden, from Wisconsin, also highlighted funds for rural healthcare.

Notable absences and an unusual cross-party interaction

Not all Republicans in close races attended the event. Senator Susan Collins, from Maine, and Senator Dan Sullivan, from Alaska, were absent. Both seek to show distance from the president in their reelection campaigns.

In contrast, Democratic Senator John Fetterman appeared in a video introducing his Republican colleague from Pennsylvania, Dave McCormick. Fetterman described himself as a Democrat, but rejected «the extremes of socialism.» His message received one of the strongest ovations of the night.

Fetterman has faced speculation about a possible party switch. Following the video, he clarified in a statement that he would continue voting with Democrats. «I will continue to be the number 51 vote I was elected as,» he stated.

Cultural issues dominate Republican discourse

Republicans focused a large part of the event on cultural issues. Trump highlighted his opposition to transgender women participating in women’s sports. The topic was repeated in several convention speeches.

Senator Tim Scott, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), harshly criticized the Democratic candidate from Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed. The Senate aspirant has publicly questioned Israel’s war in Gaza. He also refused to answer whether the State of Israel has the right to exist, and called the question a distraction.

Republicans such as Texas Representative Brandon Gill sought to link progressive legislators, including several of Muslim faith, with extremist positions. Democrats have not publicly responded to those characterizations at the time of publication.

What’s next for the November elections?

The Republican convention continues Thursday with a second night of activities. Democrats need to win four seats to recover the majority in the Senate. Contests such as those in Michigan and Georgia will be decisive for both parties.

The «Trump dividend» cannot be activated without Congressional approval. Any direct payment of this magnitude would require a law approved by both chambers. Voters will be able to follow the debate about its viability in the coming weeks of the campaign, before going to the polls on November 3rd.
