Texas authorities located 20 undocumented migrants alive who were being transported hidden inside a truck in Webb County. The discovery was made during a control operation on one of the main routes near the border with Mexico.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that the incident occurred on May 18. The intervention was carried out as part of Operation Lone Star, a state strategy focused on strengthening border security.

The case once again places the use of cargo vehicles for irregular transportation of people at the center of debate.

How Did the Discovery of the Migrants Occur?

The incident began with a traffic stop on Interstate 35, near the city of Laredo. A DPS agent stopped a white Volvo truck with trailer that was traveling on the highway.

During the intervention, the driver attempted to flee from authorities. After inspecting the vehicle, officers discovered 20 migrants hidden in the sleeper compartment of the cab.

Who Is the Driver and What Charges Does He Face?

The driver was identified as Miguel Ángel Velázquez Chávez, 25 years old and a Mexican national. Authorities transported him to Webb County Jail, where he remains in custody. This type of crime carries severe penalties in the United States. Authorities have intensified actions against networks engaged in illegal migrant transportation at the southern border.

Who Were the Rescued Migrants?

The group consisted of 20 people, including four minors. All are citizens of Mexico and Guatemala, according to the official report.

Following the discovery, the migrants were handed over to the Border Patrol in Laredo. This agency handles the corresponding immigration procedures.

No deaths or serious injuries were reported in this case. However, the conditions in which they traveled pose significant risks to health and safety.

What Risks Does This Type of Transportation Involve?

The transportation of migrants in closed compartments represents a constant danger. Lack of ventilation, extreme heat, and overcrowding can cause tragedies.

In recent years, fatal cases have been recorded in similar situations.

These methods typically involve long hours of travel under inhumane conditions. Migrants are exposed to dehydration, suffocation, and other critical risks.

What Is Operation Lone Star?

Operation Lone Star is a Texas state initiative to strengthen security at the border with Mexico. It includes police deployments, traffic controls, and actions against human smuggling.

The program has been promoted by state authorities in response to the increase in irregular crossings. It also seeks to curb criminal activities associated with human trafficking.

However, the operation has generated political debate. Some sectors question its effectiveness and its impact on migrant rights.
