Border Czar Defends ICE Shootings of Migrants

White House border czar Tom Homan defended the actions of ICE agents on Monday. He asserted that deceased migrants “would be alive today” if they had complied with orders. The statements emerged as investigations continue into recent deaths of two men in Maine and Texas. Both incidents occurred during traffic stops conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Homan spoke to media outside the White House when directly questioned about these cases. His response reaffirmed the Government’s official stance amid growing controversy.

“These People Did Not Comply with Orders”

“It all boils down to one simple fact: these people did not comply with law enforcement orders,” Homan told reporters present. The official insisted that responsibility rests directly with the victims. “We must always comply with law enforcement orders. If they had done so, they would be alive today,” added the border czar. Three Deaths in Less Than Two Weeks

In recent days, two migrants lost their lives to ICE agent gunfire. They are Mexican Lorenzo Salgado Araújo and Colombian Johan Durán, both victims of traffic stops.

The first incident occurred in Texas, while the second was recorded in Maine. Both cases generated outrage in migrant communities in their respective regions.

Additionally, on July 14, another unidentified migrant died in Florida. The man was struck by a truck after attempting to flee another traffic stop conducted by ICE.

The Minnesota Precedent

During his remarks, Homan also referred to other controversial incidents that occurred this year. He mentioned the deaths of two U.S. citizens shot by immigration agents in January in Minnesota. “As for all the mistakes they said happened in Minnesota, I don’t think many of them were really mistakes,” the official stated. His words downplayed criticism that arose following that episode. Homan is the figure tasked with coordinating the White House’s immigration policies alongside the Department of Homeland Security. This agency directly controls ICE and other related agencies.

Democrats Demand Mandatory Body Cameras

As occurred following the Minnesota events, these three new deaths reignited demands from the Democratic Party. Various figures critical of the Trump administration are calling for immigration agents to use body cameras on a mandatory basis. This demand seeks to increase transparency in immigration operations conducted throughout the country. Supporters of this measure believe it could help clarify future similar incidents. Homan Backs Body Camera Use

The border czar stated he is completely in favor of body cameras for ICE agents. According to his explanation, these tools “exonerate officers 90 percent of the time.” “I want the American people to see what an ICE officer sees when he acts,” Homan said during his remarks. A 44-Day Budget Delay

According to Homan, Democratic lawmakers blocked Department of Homeland Security budgets for 44 days. This delay would have directly affected implementation of mandatory body cameras. Last week, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt had stated that by September all agents would have these cameras. However, Homan avoided confirming a specific date during his appearance on Monday. This lack of precision raised new doubts about the true implementation timeline for the measure.

The border czar explained that personnel responsible for managing video systems are currently being trained. This preparation includes topics related to operational requirements and information storage.
