At Least 8 Deaths Result From Trump Immigration Raids
A federal immigration agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on Tuesday, marking at least the eighth death attributed to Trump’s immigration campaign and the first during the new mass deportation offensive. The 52-year-old Mexican citizen, who had lived in the United States for 35 years and was in the process of obtaining a legal work permit, was allegedly shot after refusing to comply with ICE agents during an immigration operation.

On Tuesday, a federal immigration agent shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. With this death, there are now at least eight fatal victims of Donald Trump’s government immigration campaign. It is also the first death recorded within the new mass deportation offensive driven by the White House.
Salgado Araujo was a 52-year-old Mexican citizen. He had been living in the United States for 35 years. According to his family, he worked in construction and had spent decades providing work to other tradesmen. That Tuesday he was heading out to pick up his coworkers to finish a job.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) offered a different version. It claimed that Araujo disobeyed the agents’ orders and attempted to evade arrest during an immigration operation. According to the DHS, he rammed an ICE vehicle and then attempted to run over an officer, who opened fire “in self-defense.” The agency presented no evidence to support that version.
A Repeating Pattern
Araujo was shot around 6:50 a.m., at the intersection of Canal and Wayside streets in Houston’s East End. It is a historically Latino neighborhood. The Fire Department found the man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He died shortly after in a hospital.
His son, Ronaldo Salgado, recounted at a press conference that his father was processing a legal work permit. He said that if he had seen an ICE badge, he would have stopped without issue. He believes his father mistook the agents for thieves looking to steal his tools.
“He didn’t deserve to die. He didn’t deserve to be reduced to a headline,” Ronaldo said about his father. He described him as a creature of habit, completely devoted to giving his family the American dream.
Local Authorities Demand Transparency
Houston Mayor John Whitmire demanded a transparent and independent investigation. He clarified that local police did not participate in the operation or the shooting. They only arrived afterward to help with traffic.
Democratic Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, who represents the district where the incident occurred, also called for a complete and impartial investigation. She noted that Araujo had no criminal record. She warned that ICE’s account must be verified with evidence, not taken as truth from the start.
The DHS Inspector General’s office and the FBI’s Houston field office opened parallel investigations. The FBI is reviewing the alleged assault on the federal agent. The DHS Inspector General is analyzing the use of lethal force. To date, no videos have been released that confirm or contradict the official version.
Civil Rights Organizations See a Troubling Pattern
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) compared the case to other recent deaths linked to immigration law enforcement. Its national president, Roman Palomares, spoke of a pattern of ICE involvement in shootings and excessive force.
LULAC director Juan Proaño was more direct. He pointed out that the government had already given a similar version about the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis. That story, he said, fell apart once video of the incident emerged. For this reason, he demanded concrete evidence before accepting the official account about Araujo.
A String of Deaths Since 2025
The first fatal shooting of this offensive occurred in March 2025, during a traffic stop in Texas. The victim was Rubén Ray Martínez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen. His mother asserts that a video exists that contradicts the agents’ version.
Other cases followed. Silverio Villegas González, a 38-year-old Mexican cook, was shot and killed in September during a traffic stop outside Chicago. Jaime Alanís, a 57-year-old farm worker, died after falling from the roof of a greenhouse during a raid in Camarillo, California.
In January of this year, a Border Patrol agent killed Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, during a protest in Minneapolis against the “Metro Surge” operation. A video showed that Pretti was on the ground when shots began. That same month, Renee Good, a U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent while turning the steering wheel to drive away from the officer.
Videos That Contradict Official Accounts
In several of these cases, subsequent recordings contradicted the initial account given by federal agents. Despite this, no immigration officer has faced charges for these deaths.
This pattern fuels distrust among civil organizations and the victims’ families themselves. It has also led state and local authorities to file lawsuits attempting to halt immigration raids in various cities across the country.
The Mexican Government’s Response
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to the Araujo case. She announced that her government will take “more significant legal measures” and will not limit itself to diplomatic notes. She stated that mistreatment of fellow citizens and the use of violence against them on U.S. territory cannot be tolerated.
Meanwhile, the family of Salgado Araujo awaits federal investigations to clarify what happened that morning in Houston. For now, the primary available evidence is the testimony of the ICE agents themselves.
