ALERT: ICE Conducts Mass Raid on First Day of School in Connecticut

ICE agents arrested several immigrants in Danbury and Stamford, Connecticut, on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday, August 25. The operations coincided with the first day of school for children in both communities.

Federal Senator Chris Murphy alerted on social media that agents detained parents at school bus stops. The legislator warned that some minors could not find their parents when leaving school.

Arrests Increase in Danbury and Stamford

Community activists reported on Monday that ICE agents were seen at Kennedy Park in Danbury, arresting day laborers. Videos circulated show several people handcuffed before being transported in official vehicles.

Carolina Bortolleto, from the organizations Greater Danbury Area Unites for Immigrants and CT Students for a Dream, reported more than 20 detentions in Danbury over two days. In Stamford, spokesperson Marcella Branca confirmed at least six additional arrests.

Branca recounted that on Tuesday she saw agents wearing ICE-identified vests in two vehicles in front of a school bus stop in Stamford. Children were waiting to be picked up at that time.

Stamford Public Schools’ Response

Stamford Public Schools issued a statement after learning about the operations near their facilities. Spokesperson Kathleen Steinberg reiterated that the district welcomes all students regardless of immigration status.

Steinberg also thanked the staff of the School Welcome Center for supporting affected families. The district did not confirm detentions within its educational facilities.

Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves posted a video acknowledging widespread fear in the community. He said many residents fear going to work or taking their children to school because of recent operations.

What Danbury’s Mayor Said About the Arrests

Alves, who also chairs the state Democratic Party, pointed out that the operations did not appear to be directed by specific warrants. He said agents «were selecting people based on their immigrant appearance,» focusing on individuals from Central and South America.

The wave of arrests coincided with a White House post on social media that generated controversy. The image recreated the children’s series «The Magic School Bus» as a deportation vehicle with handcuffed passengers.

The post included the phrase «Please let this be a normal field trip…». The same thread mentioned an operation in Washington D.C. with approximately 1,328 arrests in two weeks.

The combination of school operations and the post generated rejection among civil rights organizations and some state legislators. The federal administration has not yet offered a detailed explanation of the criteria used in the Connecticut arrests.
