Elsa Aguirre, one of the most iconic and emblematic actresses of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, passed away at 95 years old. The National Association of Performers of Mexico confirmed the news this Wednesday through a statement on their social media. Elsa was celebrated both for her dramatic talent and for being considered one of the most beautiful faces on the big screen. Some of her films were Careful with Love, Red Rain, and The Woman I Loved according to the official statement.

Aguirre was born on September 25, 1930 in Chihuahua, in the north of the country, although as a child she moved to Mexico City with her entire family. There she began her artistic career at age 16 after winning a beauty pageant that led her to the flourishing Mexican film industry. She made her film debut in 1945 with The Stronger Sex, although her consolidation as one of the country’s best actresses occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. Thanks to her ability to interpret roles of different kinds, from romantic stories to drama, she became a legend.

Aguirre belonged to a generation of artists that would leave a mark on Mexican cinema and beyond national borders. The actress shared the screen with illustrious names such as Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, Arturo de Córdova, and Luis Aguilar, to name a few. In addition to more than 30 films in her career, Aguirre also participated in television and theater, remaining relevant across generations. Among the telenovelas she appeared in were the memorable The Black and White of 1968 and Acapulco, Body and Soul of 1996. Her last work in the genre was Belinda in 2004.
