New York Changes Venue for ‘Puerto Rican Heritage’ Reception

New York’s annual “Puerto Rican Heritage” reception changed venues and sparked a public dispute. The organizing committee stated that the event will no longer be held at Gracie Mansion. Instead, it announced the move to Brooklyn, on the eve of the National Puerto Rican Parade.

The controversy matters because this is not a minor event. The reception has been part of the political and community calendar for Puerto Rican weekend events since the 1990s. Additionally, for years it functioned as a meeting point between elected officials, neighborhood leaders, artists, and community organizations.

However, the office of Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered a different version. City Hall maintained that there was no definitive cancellation at Gracie Mansion. According to reports from NBC New York, Telemundo 47, and City & State NY, the municipal government was evaluating changing the format, not completely eliminating the tradition.

What Changed With the Puerto Rican Heritage Reception?

The breaking point was an email dated June 1st. In that message, Álvaro López, director of the Brooklyn district for the Mayor’s Office of Community Engagement, indicated there would be no reception at Gracie Mansion. That communication was cited by local media and later used by the committee to justify the move.

Based on that message, the Puerto Rican Heritage Committee asserted there was no confusion about 2026. Its members contended that the City Hall instruction was clear. That is why they sought an alternate venue to preserve a tradition they consider historic in New York’s public life.

The new venue announced by the organizers is Pacha New York, in Brooklyn. The committee also distributed an updated flyer to announce the change. In that material, cited by NBC New York and Telemundo 47, it is emphasized that the tradition remains alive, though now “in the hands of the community.”

Why Are There Different Versions About the Venue?

The contradiction deepened when Mamdani’s administration publicly denied a total cancellation. The mayor reiterated that stance during a press conference unrelated to the matter. Municipal sources explained that López’s email responded to a prior conversation about the format of the event, not about its complete elimination.
