Millions of Social Security beneficiaries will receive their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. The Social Security Administration (SSA) confirms that the maximum amount for a single person reaches $994 monthly. The deposit depends on income, resources, and family situation of each applicant.

What is the federal SSI benefit

SSI is a federal program that provides monthly economic assistance to people with limited income and resources. It is administered by the SSA, the same agency that manages traditional Social Security, although both programs are distinct.

This benefit is directed at people who are blind, over 65 years old, or with a qualified disability. The program’s objective is to guarantee a minimum income to cover basic needs such as food and housing.

Currently, approximately 7.4 million people receive SSI payments in the United States, according to SSA figures cited by the Congressional Research Service. Among them are one million minors under 18 years old, 3.8 million adults between 18 and 64 years old, and 2.5 million people over 65.

Requirements to qualify for the September payment

To access SSI, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen. They may also qualify if they belong to an immigration category admitted by the Department of Homeland Security.

Additionally, they must reside in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands. This residency requirement is verified periodically.

Another requirement is not remaining outside the country for a complete calendar month or for 30 consecutive days. Additionally, the applicant’s economic resources cannot exceed $2,000 if single, or $3,000 if a couple.

The primary residence and one vehicle do not count within that resource limit. Meeting these conditions is essential to maintain eligibility month to month.

How much money can each beneficiary receive

The amount of $994 does not apply automatically to all program enrollees. This figure represents the federal benefit rate (FBR) for 2026, meaning the maximum monthly ceiling.

For September, an individual applicant can receive up to $994. Eligible couples who file jointly can reach up to $1,491 per month.

There is also the «essential person» category, who lives with an SSI beneficiary and provides necessary care. In that case, the maximum payment reaches $498 monthly.

The impact behind the figure

For many beneficiaries, the SSI deposit represents the only fixed income of the month. Elderly adults without pensions and people with disabilities who cannot work depend directly on this payment to cover rent and food.

The Hispanic community forms an important part of this population. Many households combine SSI with family support or informal work to complete the monthly budget, especially in cities with high cost of living.

That is why knowing the exact date and correct amount helps plan expenses in advance. A delay or unexpected reduction can directly affect the payment of basic services.

Why the actual payment can be less than the maximum

The SSA subtracts the beneficiary’s countable income from the $994 figure before issuing the final deposit. That is why the actual average payment hovers around $737 monthly, according to recent estimates based on agency data.

There are exclusions that reduce countable income. The SSA discounts $20 from almost any income and an additional $65 if the person works, before applying other calculation formulas.

Some states add a state supplement to the federal amount. This means that two beneficiaries with the same countable income can receive different amounts depending on the state where they live.

Calendar and exact deposit date

SSI payments are normally made on the first day of each month. For September 2026, that date falls on a Tuesday, with no adjustments for weekends or holidays.

Beneficiaries who also receive Social Security concurrently may see a second separate deposit on September 3. This occurs because each program maintains an independent payment schedule.

The SSA updates the federal benefit rate each year according to the Consumer Price Index. The 2026 adjustment was 2.8%, which raised the individual maximum from $967 to $994 compared to the previous year.

What beneficiaries can do now

Those receiving SSI can verify their exact amount and payment date through the «my Social Security» account. This portal is available on the SSA’s official website.

From that same account, beneficiaries can also report changes in income or address. Keeping this information updated prevents interruptions in the monthly deposit.

People who have not yet applied for the benefit and believe they meet the requirements can start the process at local SSA offices or by phone. Reviewing eligibility early avoids delays in future payments.

For the next adjustment, beneficiaries will have to wait until December 31, 2026, when the new rate corresponding to January 2027 takes effect.
