Back-to-School Season Drives Increased Remittances from Mexicans in the United States

63% of Mexicans in the United States plan to send more remittances during the 2026 back-to-school season, according to a survey by Zapp. The study surveyed 354 users online between August 4 and 9. 80% will send money specifically for school expenses, while 86% believe this support requires greater financial effort than the previous year.

The increase occurs as school expenses represent approximately 40% of average monthly household income for a Mexican family, according to Zapp’s analysis based on data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, known as INEGI.

Why Do Mexican Remittances Increase in August?

Mexican remittances increase during back-to-school season because many families in Mexico need to cover multiple expenses at the same time. These include school supplies, uniforms, footwear, backpacks, enrollment fees, and tuition.

The Zapp survey shows that 80% of respondents send money to Mexico specifically for this season. Additionally, 63% plan to increase the amount compared to the previous year.

The survey was conducted among Mexican users residing in the United States. Therefore, its results describe the decisions of this group and do not necessarily represent all Mexican migrants in the country.

The study also notes that 88% of participants financially support two or more students in their family. This may include children, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren living in Mexico.

The remittance service indicated that the main destinations for the money are school supplies. After that come uniforms, footwear, and enrollment or tuition payments.

How Much Money Will Mexicans Send from the United States?

77% of those surveyed by Zapp plan to send more than $150 during the school season. Additionally, 30% expect to send $500 or more to cover their family members’ educational needs.

The report does not establish that these amounts represent the average of all remittances sent to Mexico. The figures correspond to the intentions of the 354 users consulted by the company.

José Luis Orozco, executive director of Zapp, stated that the company identifies an additional effort among those supporting their families. «We know of the additional effort of thousands of Mexicans in the United States so that their children, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren have everything they need,» he declared.

The report also shows growing financial pressure. 86% of participants consider that this support requires greater economic effort than the previous year.
