Gas prices have risen more than 50% nationally since the start of the current war in Iran. Many citizens constantly wonder: Can average Americans protect themselves economically from these incessant daily cost increases? Unfortunately, not completely, since oil is too integrated into our daily lives.

National fuel dependence directly affects all general consumer sectors. For example, major transportation companies that use diesel trucks have imposed enormous fuel surcharges. These high additional costs are passed directly to basic products that Americans buy every day.

Oil is also used to manufacture plastic containers for many of those everyday products. This material is present in disposable utensils, beverage bottles, and trash bags. Despite this discouraging economic outlook, experts agree there are many ways to reduce our gas consumption.

What Simple Changes Improve Vehicle Performance?

The simplest measure most people can take immediately is to modify their daily driving habits. According to estimates from the U.S. Department of Energy, reducing speed while driving consumes much less gas and saves significant money. This preventive action is one of the most sustained long-term savings generators.

Reducing highway speed from 120 km/h to 88 km/h causes a gasoline vehicle to use 40% less fuel. In addition, driving more intelligently and moderately on local streets noticeably improves efficient consumption. Expert Patrick De Haan, head of analysis at GasBuddy, strongly recommends avoiding “aggressive driving,” such as rapid acceleration and hard braking.

Finally, simply regularly ensuring that tires have sufficient air can save considerable fuel. The Department of Energy estimates that drivers can reduce their consumption by up to 3% by maintaining tires properly inflated. Additionally, keeping the vehicle up to date with all preventive maintenance significantly improves performance, De Haan added.

How to Plan Trips and Find Better Prices?

Reducing the number of weekly car trips obviously decreases the total amount of fuel used monthly. This means we must plan meticulously in advance, combine daily errands, and make fewer trips to the same store throughout the week. Fewer unnecessary outings translate directly to greater savings for the entire family.
